Week 6 Post 3
Today I devoted my time and energy to helping the other Ph.D. student in the lab with their project. It is a quality assessment of the images, and gladly, I learned some openCV and PyTorch to be able to help them with that project. The project includes autonomous ultrasound scanning using Hybrid Force Control. Additionally, creating a novel ultrasound system that can provide imaging in the absence of a trained radiologist. One of the challenges of this project that I was told about was finding the optimal area to scan and then performing the actual scan. It is because it requires simultaneously maintaining contact with the surface while moving along it to capture high-quality images. I experienced today myself how hard it is to distinguish between bad-quality images and good-quality images. There are several algorithms that I experimented with, but still, getting high-quality images was a challenging task. While it does not seem like something that I usually work on, it is still related to the project with hand gesture recognition. The connecting point between the two projects is the reinforcement learning that the robot uses to learn to perform the human task. Because of this common thing, I was interested in this project and tried to use my skills and knowledge to assess the images so that when the dataset needs to be done, there are enough high-quality images for the robot to use as an orientation. As for reinforcement learning, the project requires several doctors that could perform the ultrasound scan multiple times so that the dataset is large enough for the robot to learn. While I find this project very important in the field of medicine and AI, I cannot say that this is something I'd be willing to work on with excitement in the future. I was happy to help; however, I prefer to work on the project that sparks my interest in the creation and exploration of AI recognizing objects. I believe this spark plays a key role in my inspiration and ambition to pursue a particular field of AI as a graduate student after receiving my Bachelor's degree.
